# Direct debit

> Recurring and one-off debits against a mandate.

Direct debit is two phases: the payer approves a mandate once, then you debit
against it.

**1. Initialise**

`POST /direct-debit/initialize` for recurring, or
`POST /direct-debit/initialize-onetime` for a single debit. Returns a link for
the payer to approve.

**2. Wait for approval**

Poll `GET /direct-debit/mandate-status`, or wait for the `mandate.active`
[webhook](https://docs.getflick.co/webhooks/events.md).

**3. Debit**

Only once the mandate is active.

List mandates with `GET /direct-debit/listLinks` and withdraw one with
`POST /direct-debit/Cancel`.

>
> A cancelled mandate cannot be reinstated — the payer must approve a new one. Stop
> debiting as soon as you see `mandate.cancelled`.
